XXI Century: The tourism
Tourism is, together with agriculture in a greenhouse, the engine of the economy of the area. Without the protection figure granted to the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, this exceptional place could possibly have ceased to be due to the great interest that the place arouses in the face of urban development, as well as for the creation of hibernaderos.
Currently the area has been equipped with various infrastructures so that visitors can enjoy their holidays in an exceptional environment, being the towns of San José, Las Negras, Agua Amarga or Rodalquilar the preferred places for tourists. However, due in large part to the publicity it has received in recent years, and during the summer period, the area becomes massive, jeopardizing the balance between human life and the natural ecosystem. To avoid the deterioration of the area, a great impact should be made in promoting the care and respect that the place and the beings that live there deserve. All the care that visitors, residents and park authorities put in is little.
It is still early to demonstrate that the protection of the area has been effective, but what is evident is that without it, Cabo de Gata would have been usurped by the urban powers.
